Does anybody know of a way to search network drives in OSX?

After doing a bit of research it seems this has been disabled in Leopard / Snow Leopard. I have found third party apps and work arounds but none that are really satisfactory. Third party apps don't search everything and work arounds generally mean each client Mac indexing all of our network drive which will overload the network (we have around 20TB of storage).

Any suggestions?

if the shares are hosted on Windows servers the Mac client OS will manually search for files. ExtremeZ-IP 6.0 and higher includes network spotlight searching.

Do you have any more details on the OS versions for client and server? There is a specific issue with server searches and 10.5.6.

Hi there

Searching network drives should be quite easy. There a re a number of ways to achieve this.

1. The simplest method is just to navigate to the sharepoint in the finder, make sure you open the sharepoint up and do an apple-f to perform a find. You will notice the sharepoint listed in the top of the find window from which you can select and perform a filename search.

2. To perform a search using spotlight then you will need a server that supports spotlight searches,. These would include Mac OS X Server 10.5, Mac OS X Server 10.6 and EctremeZIP for WIndows servers.

Cheers

Richard
